h) Patents/Impact on Users of Research

  • James N funding from Corus Research & Development, International Lead Zinc Research Organisation (ILZRO), North Carolina, USA under research plan ZC-21-1 Galvanizing High Performance Steels for the Construction Market. This research is intended to update work done in 1968 by the British Non-Ferrous Metals Research Association (BNF) under ILZRO project ZM-124 on the hot dip galvanizing characteristics of structural steels used at that time. Results of this research programme will form the basis of updated guidelines distributed to the galvanising industry worldwide, through ILZRO and its associated member state organisations, project manager for the EPSRC/ILL/ESRF funded joint user support Facility for Materials Engineering at the ILL-ESRF, Grenoble, France with major impact on use of synchrotron and neutron radiation strain scanning in aerospace and other industries (BAe, Rolls-Royce, Dunlop, Corus).

    British Patent GB 2 432 336A Production of composite mouldings, published 23 May 2007. This patent describes a novel route to permit in-mould gel-coating of fibre-reinforced polymer matrix composite mouldings, reducing emissions of volatile organic compounds to >1% of the open-mould gel-coating level and hence making a significant contribution to the sustainability of the composites industry. Development of the process is currently funded by DTI Technology Programme under the call Meeting the Challenge of the Zero Emission Enterprise.
