Laboratories in the Faculty of Technology are in a vibrant process of re-development to reflect new cross-disciplinary ‘themes’ that strengthen research and teaching interactions. Particularly relevant themes for future research in UoA 28 are ‘Imaging, Characterisation and Nanomagnetics’ (with Faculty of Science), and the Centre for Creative Design & Technology (with the Faculty of Arts) both of which link to innovative manufacturing. Imaging equipment acquired to support these developments includes immersive vision theatres, atomic force, confocal scanning laser microscopy (with surface metrology software) and electron microscopy. Manufacturing equipment includes a 6-station sputter deposition tool for multilayer nano-devices, 3D rapid prototyping printers, laser cutter and industrial robots. Materials characterisation equipment available through FaME38 in Grenoble and owned by the University of Plymouth, includes sophisticated servohydraulic and electro-thermo-mechanical testing rigs for in-situ beam line experiments, a coordinate measuring machine, and robotic manipulation of samples.
