Within the Centre there are a five areas of research:
Technology
The overall objective in this theme of research is to investigate the cognitive development of students learning mathematics with information communication technologies (ICT) fully integrated into the teaching, learning and assessment activities. One of the outcomes of our research is to promote good practice in mathematics teaching, including the effective use of technology in the teaching and learning process. The availability of hand-held technology and computer software is a challenge to curriculum design and the work of the technology research group addresses the needs of students learning appropriately in a modern technological world.
Staff involved in this technology research area are John Berry, Ted Graham, Carrie Headlam, Suki Honey and Jenny Sharp.

Teaching and Learning
Discussion and co-operation are important features of good learning so that another strategy of the Centre’s research is to explore teaching and learning styles that encourage a range of ingredients from the traditional didactic approach to an more investigational collaborative approach.
Staff involved in this technology research area are John Berry, Ted Graham, Nick Pratt, Jenny Sharp, Stuart Rowlands and Brian Watson.

Conceptual Understanding
The research work into the teaching and learning of mechanics has continued to be an important aspect of the work of the Centre. The extensive investigations into the development of student's conceptual understanding such as force and momentum have been used to provide a framework for developing strategies for improving student understanding.
Staff involved in this technology research area are John Berry, Ted Graham and Stuart Rowlands.

Images and Beliefs
It is accepted that images and beliefs about mathematics can affect student attitudes and motivation to learning; these need to be explored to improve the curriculum and learning environment.
Staff involved in this technology research area are John Berry, Susan Picker and Nick Pratt

Philosophy of Mathematics and Education
The Centre also has a small research group concerned with the philosophy of mathematics education.
Staff involved in this technology research area are Ted Graham, and Stuart Rowlands

School of Computing and Mathematics
The Centre is part of the School of Computing and Mathematics which has many different research areas, more information on the different areas of research can be found here.
