Mel Nyman
Melvin A. (Mel) Nyman is Professor of Mathematics & Computer Science at Alma College (in Alma, Michigan, USA). He has taught mathematics to undergraduates in small private universities for over 30 years. Mel has a BS in Chemistry (secondary teaching) from Ferris State University, MS and PhD (1972) in Mathematics (real analysis) from Michigan State University. Prior to joining the Alma College faculty in 1981, Mel was at Manchester College (Indiana) for 9 years.Mel's research interests are in the teaching and learning of undergraduate mathematics. He is particularly interested in developing student’s mathematical intuition and “feel” for mathematical concepts and he believes this encourages the development of student’s mathematical thinking.
He also has collaborated with marine botanists on modelling the growth of seaweeds.
Mel has brought groups of Alma students to study at the CTM for short periods of time on several occasions. John Berry has visited Alma to team-teach modelling courses with Mel on two occasions.
Mel is on the editorial board of the International Journal of Computer Algebra in Mathematics Education and a member of the Advisory Group of the journal Teaching Mathematics and its Applications.
