ACAD203 - Aspects of VR

Introduction
This collection of web pages is designed to act as an on-line resource for students studying the Stage 2 ACAD203 module "Aspects of VR". The module is taught by three members of staff:

  • Dave Easterbrook (module leader): "Development of 3D AutoCad into VR".
  • Yacub Rafiq: "Uses of VR".
  • Tony Tapp: "Creation of VR from the Real World".

These pages will also be used to host some of the student output from the module.

Creation of VR from the Real World.
The aims of this part of the module are:
  • To get an understanding of the theory behind 'Real World' VR,
  • To get hands-on experience of using suitable tools (eg digital and film cameras, QTVR hardware and software),
  • To create a range of VR elements (eg QTVR Panorama and Object movies),

Stitched 360 degree panorama of Cotehele Quay, ready for conversion to a QTVR.

  • To integrate VR elements into a VR 'environment' (eg a QTVR walk-through),
  • To publish the results on the WWW.

Extensive use will be made of two free software tools - Adobe Acrobat and Apple QuickTime - if you don't have these already you can use the following links to get the latest versions.

Apple QuickTime - Click to link to web site.
Get Adobe Acrobat - click to link to web site.

Click here to see a sample of a QTVR panorama - this was recorded during the first lecture.

Click here to get copies of lecture notes and other useful documents.

Click here to see some links to useful VR web sites.

Click here to view some sample QTVR images of Plymouth, West Devon and East Cornwall.

Output from Students.
Probably the best way to learn the technique of QTVR production is to actually work on a viable project - two sites were chosen for student projects in 2000/2001. Almost all of the images used to produce the QTVR panorama on the following pages were taken by students.

Click here to view a selection of outdoors QTVR panorama from around Portland Square, Plymouth.

Click here to view some indoor and outdoor QTVR panorama from Avon House, Lipson.
