UCAS K255 BSc/CME Introduction This is a course of proven excellence which was awarded an outstanding 23/24 points in the Government's most recent Teaching Quality Assessment, one of the highest scores achieved. Our graduates are successful, being offered well paid very rewarding positions with leading national contractors and consultants. The course is well recognised, being accredited by both the Chartered Institute of Building and the Association of Building Engineers, and focuses on employability and interaction with employers.
Stage 1: The first year of the course is devoted to developing a firm understanding of the principles of building, management and environmental issues. Topics studied include construction, materials, environmental science, IT, management and site surveying. Highlights of the year include an Eco house design project in the second Semester, poster design and drawing activities, as well as numerous site visits and a field trips. Recent destinations for visits have included Paris, New York and the Centre for Alternative Technology in Wales. Stage 2: This stage develops your management abilities and focuses in more depth on issues such as large building technology, environmental and energy studies, operations management and building re-use, together with a project-based module based around solving a real building problem. You will develop skills in people and project management and undertake site visits to promote interest and practical knowledge. You will have the opportunity to undertake a year in industry after Stage 2. Support and encouragement is given by staff, who will also help you to secure an appropriate placement. Stage 3: You will gain a specialist understanding of professional management practice, vital for managers. You will take modules dealing with environmental impact; health and safety; project management, and development management, as well as undertaking project-based modules and a research-based dissertation.
