HND Civil Engineering Studies and
BSc (Hons) Civil Engineering or Civil & Coastal Engineering.
UCAS 002H HND/CvE and UCAS H201 BSc/CE or UCAS H256 BSc/CivCo
Introduction
Our HND in Civil Engineering Studies is a successful and well established programme that has been running for nearly 20 years.
Many ex-HND students have joined the programme following a disappointing A-Level performance and then gained direct entry to Stage 2 of the BEng (Hons) in Civil Engineering and subsequently become Chartered Engineers. HND students can also join the final stage of our BSc (Hons) courses - see below for details.
Other HND students have switched to degree courses in other Faculties at Plymouth or at another university or had successful careers in industry.
Many HND modules are assessed by an even mixture of exams (50%) and coursework (50%), while some are assessed purely by coursework.

Our BSc (Hons) courses are accredited at Incorporated Engineer (IEng) level, which is now regarded by the Engineering Council as the normal career grade for the majority of Civil Engineers. These courses, which started in 2000, build on the success of our previous HND/BSc.
Stages 1 and 2 of the HND and BSc (Hons) courses are similar with the additional year of study on the BSc (Hons) course allowing you to obtain an honours degree in three years. This is an attractive option to many students.
Pathways are available in General Engineering and Coastal Engineering, hence the named award of BSc (Hons) in Civil & Coastal Engineering.
The BSc (Hons) and HND can be taken as sandwich programmes with 12 months in industry. However, since many HND students intend switching to a degree course, the HND is usually taken full time.
Factfile
Duration
HND: 2 years full time or 3 years sandwich.
BSc: 3 years full time or 4 year sandwich.
