Portland Square - 13th July 2001
Site overview

Site overview - picture taken from the 11th floor of the adjacent Mary Newman building.

Rig to drill for piled foundations.

Starting to drill one of the holes for the piled foundations - the holes will eventually be filled with reinforced concrete. This hole is being drilled where the squash courts used to be.

Removing surplus overburden

Large quantities of surplus soil and weathered rock are being removed from the site.

Mobile crane at the southern end of the site.

The southern end of the site - this area of the site contained many services (telecoms, electricity etc) which had to be relocated before work could begin in earnest. Once this had been completed several 'test' piles were driven to check the soil conditions. This mobile crane was being used to move heavy tubular steel pile linings and other miscellaneous plant around the site.
