Portland Square - 3rd August 2001
Cranes and Pile caps . |
Here's the first of the tower cranes - finished and ready for use.
Some of the piles bored on the site were more than 10m long. These four piles will eventually support one of the main structural elements.
The foundations are heavily reinforced - this photo shows the bottom steel for one of the pad foundations.
Holding-down bolts were cast into the foundations to fix the structural steel frame. The polystyrene 'cones' allow the bolt positions to be fine-tuned once the concrete has been cast.
![]() All structural concrete is cured under damp hessian until the formwork can be struck.
As part of the specification for the groundworks there was a requirement to test load one of the piles. The load was applied to the capped pile using a hydraulic jack - the reaction force was transferred to two adjacent piles by a steel spreader beam.
