Building Surveying IT Feasibility Project
Stage 3 - Module ENBS319

Introduction.
These pages will provide information to enable you to work on your IT Feasibility Project. Please DO NOT visit the building for this stage of the Project, it is not necessary and there are health and safety precautions that you would need to be advised of beforehand. This web site should provide all the information you need about the building and its location - you will not gain further help for your feasibility study by going there for yourself.

There are a number of connected files which you will need to access and download before you start work, these are:

  • 'Project Brief' - this explains exactly what you need to do for this assignment.
  • 'Help and About this Project' - this explains about the template which is designed to enable you to structure and present your feasibility study.
  • The project 'Template' pages.
  • Some 'Help' files to assist you with working with graphics files.

Click here to link to the "Index" page for these files.

After reading the above documents, you should be clear about the requirements of the project. However, if you feel you want further help then come along to one of the timetabled tutor support sessions, or contact the tutor directly if you need immediate assistance.

Don't forget - this is an individually assessed piece of work - you will have a chance to work in teams in other areas of the module.

Design ideas will need to be researched from other sources and you may find it useful to refer to technology or maintenance texts to refresh your memory of defects' analysis.

Illustrations and photographic images.
The following images are provided to enable you to carry out a 'virtual' condition survey of the building referred to in the project brief. If you haven't read the brief yet, do so now, to avoid wasting time backtracking as you view the digital images.

The University of Plymouth Diving and Sailing Centre was built in 1967. The site map below will give you an idea of the environmental context of the building.

Site map - click on one of the coloured dots to see a panorama photograph taken from that location.

Site Map - the UoP Diving and Sailing Centre is marked in yellow; the main buildings are shown in green. Click here to download a printable version of this map (in Adobe Acrobat pdf format).

Click here if you need to download Adobe Acrobat Reader (free).

Please note that floor plans are provided at the end of this page. You might find it useful to view or print these first, to enable you to navigate around the building whilst viewing the photographs.

VR Images.
The Red, Blue, Purple, Green and Yellow dots shown on the site map above mark the positions where interactive QuickTime VR photographs have been taken.

  • Zoom in on the Blue VR image for a close-up of the West Elevation of the building - you will need to supplement this understanding of the construction later, by inspecting the photographs on Page 2 and Page 3 (which show examples of external and internal features respectively). If you haven't started making notes yet, do so now, to avoid wasting time going backwards and forwards between the pages of this site. You might find it easiest to navigate your way around the building generally first and then make notes about detailed elements from the photographs afterwards.
  • Zoom in on the Purple, Green and Yellow VR panorama images for a close-up of the roof of the building - you will need to supplement this understanding of the construction later, by inspecting the photographs on Page 4, Page 5 and Page 6 (showing examples of features at roof level, organised by location). You will also be able to see adjacent areas of social housing, the harbour, the National Marine Aquarium and other marine facilities.
  • The Red VR panorama shows the south elevation of the building.

These VR images utilise QuickTime software from Apple - if you haven't got this free software on your computer then you can download it from Apple's web site - click the logo below. Note also that each image file is about 400kB - which might take a minute or two to download over a modem internet connection.

Click here if you need to download Apple QuickTime (free).

Other 'simple' versions of these VR images are available - click here for details.

Photographs.
There are lots of photographs available which might help you to assess the state of repair of the structure - select from the following list:

Sample pictures - select from the list shown above.

Floor plans.
F
loor plans of the main building can be downloaded (in Adobe Acrobat pdf format - about 200kB each) for use with your report. The plans are drawn to scale; however, a high degree of accuracy in measurements is not important at this stage, as you are really only considering the overall size of areas and layout. You might find it easiest to navigate your way around the building using these plans. Prints of these plans may help with your initial orientation. DO NOT visit the building at this stage, it is not necessary.

If you want a quick look at the plans before you download them then click here.
