Introduction

I qualified as an Incorporated Surveyor (IAAS), serving on the IAAS General Council and various committees. Following the renaming to the Association of Building Engineers (FBEng), I registered, through the Society of Professional Engineers, as a European Professional Engineer in 1995 and Inginieur Professionel de France.

I am a Fellow of the RICS and have held numerous posts at Branch and HQ, including membership of the Building Surveyors' Divisional Council, BS Education Committee, BS Practice and Techniques Committee, working groups and as an Examiner and chairman assessor for the APC. I am co-author of the RICS roof coverings guidance note.

I have had a varied career, starting in Local government in Berkshire and finishing, after 18 years, as Borough Surveyor at Shrewsbury in Shropshire, where I dealt with Public Building Maintenance and Grants and Building Control. The numerous buildings under my supervision ranged from the Abattoir to the Castle demanding a true appreciation of the differing demands of building users and developing my management and interpersonal skills.

As well as working overseas in Gibraltar and Spain I have also worked in private practice and eventually, after an 'astute move', in 1988 found myself a niche in the education field. I started in Further Education as a Principal Lecturer at Reading College of Technology running the RICS courses and, following redundancy in 1994, shared my time as a freelance lecturer between the Universities of Kingston (School of Surveying) and Reading (Department of Construction Management) until 1997.

1997 - 2001: Senior Lecturer, School of Civil & Structural Engineering, University of Plymouth.
