BSc (Hons) Environmental Construction Surveying.
(UCAS K260)

Introduction.
If you have an interest in the environment and in property then this course should be your first choice !.

Why ? - Because our Building degrees were recognised as one of the top three in the country, being awarded an outstanding 23/24 points in the Government's most recent Teaching Quality Inspection.

The strengths of this new course are its focus on the linkages between environmental issues, architecture and building surveying. As far as we are aware there is no other undergraduate course like this in the country.

You will study with students enrolled on closely related degrees in surveying, architecture, construction management and Civil Engineering, providing exciting opportunities for interaction and development.

Stage 1: The first year of the course is devoted to developing an understanding of the principles of building, management and environmental issues. Topics studied include environmental studies, construction, materials, environmental science, computer aided design (CAD), management and surveying. Highlights of the year will include an Eco house design project which is included in the second Semester, poster design and drawing activities, as well as numerous site visits and a field trip; recent destinations have included Paris, New York and the Centre for Alternative Technology in Wales.

Stage 2: The program for this year is designed to create a broad awareness of the technical, environmental and professional issues involved in the property industry. Subjects covered include innovative buildings, building performance / pathology, building reuse, energy efficiency in buildings, building services design and building structures. Activities undertaken include a major design project. Some opportunities to study alongside specialist architectural modules such as History of Architecture will be available and site visits again promote interest and practical knowledge.

An optional scheme is available for students to experience a year in industry after completing Stage 2. We will encourage you to undertake this option and provide advice and assistance in securing an appropriate placement.

The University's Davy Building - recently reclad to enhance its energy efficiency.

Stage 3: The final Stage engenders specialist knowledge and academic skills needed to set you well on the way to a very successful professional career. Subjects available will include building renewal, building conservation, health and safety, environmental impact, professional practice, and building envelope design. There are design project modules, and a research dissertation may be undertaken.

Career Opportunities.
Environmental Building is an expanding and increasingly important subject for all those involved in the design, construction, development and management of property. Graduates from this programme will be empowered to work alongside design and other professionals in both the public and private sector, including Architects, technologists, surveyors, developers, building contractors and other similar organisations. The unique environmental flavour and quality of this degree is particularly helpful, giving an important 'edge' over others. Some graduates will take advantage of this excellent course in a different way, pursuing general management careers both in the UK and overseas.
