UCAS K285 BSc/QSE Introduction. Stage 1: The first stage of this course is devoted to developing a firm understanding of the principles of building, management and environmental issues. Topics covered include domestic construction, construction materials science, environmental science, information technology, and management. An environmentally themed design project is included in the second semester, and other interesting activities include a poster design project, computer-aided design exercises, and laboratory experiments. Site visits enhance your studies.
Stage 2: The second stage is designed to develop initial knowledge to create a broad awareness of the technical, environmental and professional issues involved in quantity surveying. Interesting subjects covered include innovative buildings, cost control, building reuse, energy efficiency, and building structures. Activities undertaken include a major project on a real building, practical quantity surveying, and developing skills in estimating and project management. Site visits are undertaken to promote interest and practical knowledge. Students normally experience a year in industry after Stage 2. We strongly encourage you to take this option and provide assistance and advice in securing appropriate placements. Stage 3: The final stage develops the specialist knowledge and academic skills needed to set you well on the way to a very successful professional career. Subjects include quantity surveying practice, health and safety, environmental impact, professional practice, and development management.
