Introduction |
| Tutors The School of Civil and Structural Engineering allocates each student a Personal Tutor. If needed, he or she is there to listen or offer advice on any problem, be it personal, financial, academic or whatever. Additionally, there is a Pastoral Tutor within the School who can be approached by any student. The Stage and Programme Tutors offer guidance about course content and delivery. The Industrial Training Tutor helps students find jobs for the sandwich programme and checks on their progress during the year to make sure that the training being provided by the employer is satisfactory. |
| Student Services The University of Plymouth's Student Services and the Students' Union work closely together, and each offers a range of support facilities. Personal Counsellors are there to help, either in individual or group counselling sessions, should you ever feel lonely, anxious, confused, depressed, or experience family or relationship difficulties. There are also Student Personal Advisors who provide support and advice to students with academic and personal problems (eg. study skills, exam stress). |
| Learning Difficulties Support is available to students with specific Learning Difficulties, including dyslexia. Specialist staff from Student Services are available for consultation and assessment. |
| Careers Office Very few students know exactly what they want to do after university. The University's Careers Office advises on future study, job searching, applications, and interviews.
| Health Services The University campus at Plymouth has a well-equipped Health Centre with a nurse available to discuss health and safety matters. Regular surgeries are held by local doctors. For more information please check out their web site. |
| Chaplaincy The University's Chaplaincy offers friendship, practical help and support to all students, regardless of religious background. Walks on the moor and weekends away are just a couple of the organised events.
| Sports and Recreation The Recreation Service and Students' Union arrange a whole host of sports, societies and leisure activities. |
| Accomodation Office Almost all students make use of the University's Accommodation Service. The University undertakes to find everyone somewhere suitable to live, be it in Halls of Residence, a privately rented house, flat, or whatever.
| Academic and Information Services The Academic and Information Services Department is the main provider of information, learning and teaching support services. This includes the University Library, computing laboratories and media workshops that include desk-top publishing systems, colour laser printing, binding and video editing facilities. |
| International The International Office and Overseas Students' Society provide information and support to students from many countries. This includes help with the English language and studying, as well as social activities.
| Finance Advice on financial matters is available either from Student Services or the Students' Union. This include access to emergency "hardship" funds due to circumstances such as a student load cheque arriving late.
Other sources of information about finance matters include the Department for Education and Employment, the National Union of Students and the Office of Fair Trading. |
| Students Union The Students' Union is run by students for students. It organises clubs, societies, sporting and social events. As well as offering many of the services above, its subsidised facilities include bars, shops, launderettes, cheap travel opportunities, plus academic, financial and legal advice. The welfare service can deal confidentially with anything from accommodation problems to more personal issues. |
