Road.
The city is easily reached by road from the east by the dual carriage A38 "Devon Expressway", which links into the motorway network (M5) and other major trunk routes (A30 / A303 / A35) at Exeter. The A38 continues westwards from Plymouth into Cornwall via the Tamar bridge. The city's coach station is only 100 yards from Palace Court (the home of the School of Civil and Structural Engineering); the luxury service from London's Victoria coach station takes 4 1/2 hours.

| Rail. The city's main rail station is only about 200 yards from the University campus. There is a regular service to London Paddington (journey time: 3 1/2 hours), with other direct services to South Wales, the Midlands, the North and Scotland.

| Air. Plymouth City Airport is served by British Airways and its Brymon Airways subsidiary. There are regular direct flights from Plymouth to London Gatwick; other destinations include Cork, Jersey and Guernsey. Exeter Airport (40 miles) offers direct scheduled flights to many European cities.

| Sea. Brittany Ferries travel from Plymouth's Millbay Ferryport to Roscoff in north west France (year round service), and to Santander on the north coast of Spain (March - October only). The Roscoff service offers the opportunity for an easy long weekend take-a-break-from-studies getaway.
