More success in National Steel Design Competitions |
| Four graduates of the School of Civil and Structural Engineering at the University of Plymouth were awarded second prize in the Year 2000 National Design Competition organized by Corus (formerly British Steel) and the Steel Construction Institute. Michael Buller, Kyla Nunn, Stuart Colwill and Matt Berry collected the award at a prestigious event in London.
The brief was the design of a car marque (display pavilion) for a prestigious national company to be constructed on a difficult triangular site. The structure was to be of tubular steelwork and had to be capable of supporting cars hung from the roof and providing an elevated-viewing gallery. The group were recommended by Ken Bird, their tutor for the project, for submission to the National Event after being awarded a £250 prize in the regional stage of the competition. With an award of £750 for second place in the National Competition, each graduate received a certificate and a cheque for £250 from Mark Whitby, Vice President of the Institution of Civil Engineers. Four other graduates also received an Award of £250 for their design of a Transport Interchange Building in Structural Steelwork . They were David Parker, Jon Hughes, Kalpesh Parmer and Scott Davies. In his address to an audience of about 200 graduates, tutors, judges and visitors, Dr Graham Owen, Director, Steel Construction Institute commented on the high level of the entries and of the important fact that the submissions showed that they were ahead of what is happening in industry. The School of Civil and Structural Engineering are extremely pleased that their students are able to prove that the teaching of Structural Design continues at a high level. |
