Students win Millennium Competition |
| Two students from the University of Plymouth have won the £2000 first prize in a Structural Design Competition to celebrate the Millennium. About 40 firms and individuals entered the competition, run by the Institution of Structural Engineers. Entrants had to design a structure which blended elegance and material science within a sculptured form. The freestanding structure had to be no larger than 6.5 m and 2.0 x 2.0 m in plan. The winning design will eventually be built at a suitable high profile location in the South West. Matt Lee, a student on the School of Civil and Structural Engineering's Bachelor of Engineering degree in Civil Engineering combined with recent School of Architecture graduate Dominic Howe to win the top prize.
The judging panel was chaired by Dr John Roberts, the President of the Institution of Structural Engineers. The judges were particularly impressed with the winning entry of a "Tetragonal Anti-prism" which was considered to combine an innovative structural concept with an exciting visual appearance. |
