Research

Studentships.
University Scholarships.
Up to 20 Scholarships are available on a competitive basis to all students who intend to undertake full time research degree at MPhil/PhD level at the University of Plymouth. Scholarships are open to those students who intend to commence their research degrees in 2003/4. Those applying for scholarships must also have made an application to the University of Plymouth to undertake a research degree.

Scholarships for research degrees are available in all academic areas. The scholarships will cover UK/EU tuition fees and a maintenance allowance of £9,000. Applications from non-UK/EU students are welcome with the expectation that they secure funds to meet the difference in fee level. Additional funding for non-UK/EU students may be available from the Universities UK-s Overseas Research Student (ORS) Award and following discussion with your supervisor you may be expected to apply for this Award.

Projects
Scholarships for research degrees are available in all academic areas. The following is a list of potential PhD project titles offered by the School, together with a contact person for further project-specific information.

  • "Damage and deterioration of structures using vibration techniques and neural networks." - Structural Engineering - Dr Clive Williams.
  • "Assessment of temporary demountable grandstands using vibration testing and analysis." - Structural Engineering - Dr Clive Williams.
  • "Development of prediction techniques for long term morphological change on mixed sand/shingle beaches." - Coastal Engineering - Professor A. Chadwick
  • "Nonlinear wave transformation in the nearshore environment including an ambient current field." - Coastal Engineering - Dr Ashwini K. Otta.
  • "Long wave oscillations inside harbours - mechanisms and quantifications." - Coastal Engineering - Dr Aswini K. Otta.
