1975: BSc (Hons) Civil Engineering, University of Salford.

1987: Chartered Engineer, CEng.

1987: Member, Institution of Civil Engineers, MICE.

1990: Member, Institution of Structural Engineers, MIStructE.

1990: Member, Institution of Highways and Transportation, MIHT.

1979 - 88: Senior / Principal Engineer, Plymouth City Council.

1988 - 91: Associate, Jubb and Partners Consulting Engineers, Plymouth.

1991 - date: Senior Lecturer in Civil Engineering, University of Plymouth.

Teaching
My teaching in the School includes structural engineering, computing and IT, computer aided design and interdisciplinary design projects.
Research
My research interests involve structural masonry and the use of artificial intelligence in structural design. The work on structural masonry is focused on the use of prestressing in masonry arch design using synthetic prestressing tendons. This form of construction can lead to structures which are both aesthetically pleasing and require very little maintenance (see picture below).

Prestressed brickwork used to build a footbridge; uses 4 synthetic fibre 'Parafil' tendons. Tring, Hertfordshire.

Artificial intelligence techniques such as the genetic algorithm and artificial neural networks are being applied to the design of building structures with a view to an overall cost saving in both construction and energy requirements.
