Introduction
I was born and raised in East Yorkshire - and I'm still learning English as a foreign language !. I had a varied background as a structural analyst in aeronautical and mechanical engineering before entering the School of Civil and Structural Engineering in 1970.

1960: BSc Aeronautical Engineering.

1962: MSc Aircraft Structures.

1962: Member, Royal Aeronautical Society.

1956 - 63: Apprentice / Stressman, Hawker Siddley Aviation.

1963 - 70: Lecturer, Hull College of Technology.

1970 - 2000: Senior Lecturer / Principal Lecturer, School of Civil & Structural Engineering, University of Plymouth.

2000 - date: Visiting Lecturer, School of Civil & Structural Engineering, University of Plymouth (semi - retired).

Teaching
I divide my teaching time between Structural Analysis and Coastal Engineering.
Research
My research interest and consultancy work is primarily in the field of Coastal Engineering. I am involved in the analysis of wave impact loads on coastal structures. This covers not only laboratory testing but also obtaining full scale measurements from the Alderney breakwater in the Channel Islands (pictured below). The results have been presented in journals and at workshops and conferences all over Europe and America.

Publications
The most recent publications that I have been involved with are "Characteristics of wave impacts on a steep fronted breakwater" and "Field and laboratory measurements of wave loads on vertical breakwaters", both of which were presented at 'Coastal Structures '99' held in Santander, Spain in June 1999.

Other publications include:

Walkden, M. J., Crawford, A. R., Bullock, G. N., Hewson, P. J. and Bird, P. A. D. 1996. Wave Impact Loadings on Vertical Structures. Advances in Coastal Structures and Breakwaters. Proceedings of International Conference at the Institution of Civil Engineers. Ed. Clifford, J. E., Thomas Telford, London, pp 273 - 286.

Crawford, A. J., Hewson, P. J., Bullock, G. N. and Bird, P. A. D. 1997. A Technical Description of the Field Measurement Study of Impact Pressures and Associated Parameters at the Alderney Vertical Masonry Breakwater. MAST III Report, Gran Canaria Workshop, February 1997, 14pp.
