Got some free time?

There are a number of internationally acclaimed attractions in the city of Plymouth. If you have a spare moment take a look, you'll be pleasantly surprised at what Plymouth has to offer.

An internationally renowned marine conservation centre, with a pioneering sea-horse rearing programme. Watch teams of divers feed sharks by hand and marvel at the fantastic secrets of the sea revealed at the amazing new Aquarium. The National Marine Aquarium (pictured right) can be found opposite the Dartington Glass Visitor Centre on the Barbican.

The Barbican
One of the oldest parts of the city, a glorious taste of a bygone era in Plymouth. Full of cobbled lanes, quirky shops, friendly pubs, restaurants for all tastes and still a working fishing harbour. Pick up a portrait at famous Plymouth artist Lenkiewicz's Gallery or step back in time in the Elizabethan House and Gardens. Take an intoxicating tour around the Plymouth Gin Distillery or simply discover the mouth-watering waterside snacks of world famous Cap'n Jaspers. The Barbican is a short 10 minute walk away from the University campus and is well worth the stroll.

An abundance of beautiful areas to visit

Should you have a little longer there are plenty of wonderful places around Plymouth to visit for an afternoon. Take the water taxi to Mount Edgecumbe country park - where there are glorious walks through the 800 acre grounds or you can look around the famous house steeped in history. Or how about taking a breathtaking walk through miles of rugged Dartmoor (interspersed with country pubs for refreshments) or around the coastline, on which the city is situated.

Plymouth SU - Sporting Success

Our Students' Union sports clubs have been bowled over by successes in the past year. Here are just some of our achievements:

o Will the University of Plymouth ever let this one go? The Surf Club are the BUSA team champions for 1999. A great achievement, as this is now for the fourth year in a row - proof that our internationally renowned beaches are second to none for producing surfing champions;

o The Water-ski Club were riding on the crest of a wave as the 1999 National Student Champions;

o The Student Sailing National Championships are held in Plymouth annually. The 1999 Championships at the nationally acclaimed Mountbatten Watersports Centre saw Plymouth come in a well deserved 3rd out of 27 Universities;

o Another first for the University of Plymouth! The Men's Squash Club was promoted to the British Universities Sports Association (BUSA) Premier League for the first time ever this year;

o The Ladies Volleyball team won the 1999 BUSA shield competition - pitted against all other UK universities.

Any student can join any club, at any level. Find out about Student Union clubs during your first few weeks or contact the Recreation Service.
