Shopping In Plymouth

Plymouth is lucky in that there is a wide range of shops - all within close proximity of each other.

In the main , pedestrainised, city shopping area you will find all the major national, international and local retail outlets - Marks and Spencer, River Island, Virgin, Tesco, Smiths, Woolworth's, HMV, BHS, Surf Life (to name but a few) and enough sports shops to kit out your favourite sports team. The main shopping area is divided into the following main streets - Cornwall Street, New George Street, Royal Parade and Mayflower Street. In between all the shops you'll find water features, places to rest and children's areas - all these within a five minute walk from the main University campus.

If you're looking for bargains, then the Pannier Market may be off interest to you. Located in Cornwall Street, undercover, you will find everything from shoes to picture frames to food and drink here - all at market prices.

The Barbican area also has a wide range of shops. Located close to the Plymouth Harbour, most of the shops have a nautical feel to them. Surfing shops, antique shops and general nick-knack shops are all on offer. You will also find some fine eating establishments down there, including Beefeater, Pier Master, various Italian and Sea Food restaurants and also the famous Captain Jaspers take-away cafe. The Barbican Glassworks could be worth a visit. Recently opened in May 1997 it promises great things - including the famous Dartington Crystal.

In addition to all this, there are smaller, local, shops in the different Plymouth districts.

In the South West, the other towns offering similar sized shopping areas include Paington, Torquay or Exeter. If you are looking for local shops, offering local products, try venturing a little further to the smaller towns and villages that can be found in the South West.
