Mathematics Enrichment for Students

The Mathematics Enrichment Programme (MEP) has been running since 1995 and provides extra curricular activities for young people from primary through to Year 12 form who are able or interested in mathematics and its applications. The activities are centred around the Plymouth area but often we are asked to run workshops for individual schools throughout the country. The MEP coordinator is Jenny Sharp.

A Level Revision Days 2009/2010

The Centre runs A level Revision Days throughout the year.

We have one to coincide with the 'January' Examinations for Core 1, Monday 21st December in Plymouth. The day is suitable for all exam boards. You will be guided through the syllabus, topic by topic, provided with a pack of examples and solutions to help your revision and given lots of helpful hints for examination success.

Further details and an application form for all days can be found by clicking here

A draft timetable of the day for the Plymouth Days can be found by clicking here

It is possible for us to come to your school to run a revision day specifically tailored to your students and board. We can do C1, C2, C3, C4, S1, M1, AS Core or A2 Core. The cost of such a day would be £400 for groups up to 30. For larger groups we would charge £400 (for 30 students) plus £6 for each additional student. In addition, travelling expenses would also need to be covered by the school. For more information on such courses please contact Ted Graham by email: egraham@plymouth.ac.uk

The Centre is happy to provide work experience places for students who would like to find out what we do. Further details about recent placements can be found here:

Below are details of the activities that are currently being run by the MEP.

Primary Masterclasses

The Primary Masterclass are for year 5 students who show an interest or aptitude in mathematics. They provide an opportunity for the students to meet and work with like minded youngsters in an out of school environment. Each September we hold four full day workshops for year 5 for schools in the Plymouth and surrounding areas. On average each day has 80 students from 15 local schools.

The success of the year 5 Masterclasses led us to run some for year 6. Each year in June we run three days for students from the Plymouth area and each day has about 100 students.

Masterclass Programme

The Masterclass Programme targets students who are able and/or interested in mathematics. It is part of a nationwide programme of Masterclasses coordinated by the Royal Institution. We currently have a programme for year 8, year 9 and year 10.

Year 8 Masterclasses
2001saw the introduction of masterclasses for year 8 students. Plymouth City Council obtained funding through their Gifted, Talented and More Able Pupils initiative. The classes are now a regular feature of the programme attracting about 60 students from local schools.

Year 9 Masterclass
We run a series of 5 Saturday morning masterclasses in the Spring term for about 60 year 9 students. Each class covers a different topic which is designed to stretch the able student and to provide a view of mathematics not available through the National Curriculum in school.

South West Masterclass Event
As a follow up event for the students who attended the Year 9 masterclasses in the Spring we run a one day workshop in June for those students who attended the Plymouth, Exeter and Truro series. Again it provides an opportunity for students to others who are interested in mathematics and the activities allow them to see some applications of mathematics.

Residential Masterclass
The final event in the Masterclass programme is a three day residential course for the year 10 students who attended the Plymouth masterclass series the previous year. This is held in association with the Hatfield masterclass group and we take turns in hosting the course.

Channel Islands Mathematics Extravaganza

For many years the CTM has been involved in a three day event which provides Guernsey with two Primary Masterclasses for students in year 5 from all Primary schools on the Island, a Year 9 Masterclass for all secondary schools, a Year 12 form Masterclass for all Year 12 form Schools and an additional Year 9 masterclass for one particular school - Les Beaucamps. This annual event is sponsored by Old Mutual International.

2003 saw the event being extended to the neighboring island of Jersey for another three days with a Primary Masterclass for the feeder schools of Haute Vallee Secondary School, a Year 12 form Masterclass for all Year 12 form Schools and a Year 9 Masterclass for Haute Vallee School.

Tavistock Area Year 6 Workshops

For a number of years the CTM has been involved in a project with Tavistock Area schools. To aid progression from Junior to Secondary school and to provide enrichment for those interested in mathematics, Tavistock Community College work in partnership with their feeder schools. On three occasions throughout the year, Year 6 students go into the College for a mathematics workshop run by the CTM. The students get a chance to see thier secondary school as well as a chance to work with students from other schools who they will be meeting again when they start at the College. This model is one that many Secondary Schools are adopting to aid progression. If you would like to discuss these ideas for your school then please do not hesitate to contact us.(jsharp@plymouth.ac.uk )
