Mathematics Enrichment for Students

The Mathematics Enrichment Programme has been running since 1995 and provides extra curricular activities for young people from primary through to Year 12 form who are able or interested in mathematics and its applications. The activities are centred around the Plymouth area but often we are asked to run workshops for individual schools throughout the country. The Mathematics Enrichment Programme coordinator is Jenny Sharp.

A Level Revision Days

UPDATE: We have a C1 revision day planned for Monday 19th December at the University of Plymouth. Full details and a booking form can be found by clicking here

The Centre is available to run A level Revision Days throughout the year.

It is possible for us to come to your school to run a revision day specifically tailored to your students and board. We can do C1, C2, C3, C4, S1, M1, AS Core or A2 Core. The cost of such a day would be £400 for groups up to 30. For larger groups we would charge £400 (for 30 students) plus £6 for each additional student. In addition, traveling expenses would also need to be covered by the school. For more information on such courses please contact Ted Graham by email: egraham@plymouth.ac.uk

Work Experience

The Centre is happy to provide work experience places for students who would like to find out what we do. Further details about recent placements can be found here:

Below are details of the activities that are currently being run by the Centre for schools local to the Plymouth Area. If your school does not receive information from the Centre regarding our activities and feel that you are within reasonable traveling distance, please contact Jenny Sharp

Primary Masterclasses

Year 5 masterclasses for schools in the wider Plymouth area

For 2011-2012 I will be again running a day long masterclass (10:00-3:00), focusing on one topic for the day so we can really explore something in depth. There will be a number of these days throughout the year. Places will be limited to 24 per day to enhance the learning experience. Schools will be invited to send up to 4 pupils and the cost per pupil will be £18. Letters concerning these days will be sent out to schools when dates are confirmed.

Year 6 workshops for schools in the wider Plymouth area

For 2011 - 2012 I plan to run the year 6 workshops as usual in June, each day running from 10am to 3pm. Up to 6 pupils per school are invited to these days and they will work on three activities during the day. The cost per pupil will be £11. Letters concerning these days will be sent out to schools immediately after the Easter Holidays at the end of April.

Feedback that I have received from schools indicate that the teacher or experienced TA who attends with the pupils on these days view the workshop as valuable professional development. Often, when pupils attend external courses without a teacher from their school, very little of what the pupil has worked on makes its way back to school and the teachers have no opportunity to build on it or receive feedback on how the pupil coped with the day. When teachers attend courses with the pupils it allows them to see the pupils working in an out of school environment and how they coped with the day, both socially and academically. I always try to provide good resources that can be taken back to school and used with other pupils; often schools let the pupils that attended teach the rest of the class some aspect of what they learnt. I feel that it is extremely important that a teacher or experiences TA attend such courses with their pupils and so pupils who attend will need to be accompanied by teacher or TA.

Secondary Masterclass Programme

Year 7 mathematics masterclasses

New this year will be some days for your year 7’s. These will be a single whole day masterclass and will be on a school day in the second half of the spring term. I run such workshops for year 5’s and 6’s and I would like to expand the programme to fill the gap until year 9. I will be sending you details about these at the beginning of the Spring Term

Year 9 Masterclass

The Year 9 Masterclass Programme targets students who are able and/or interested in mathematics. It is part of a nationwide programme of Masterclasses coordinated by the Royal Institution. The series consists of 5 sessions each exploring a topics which is not covered in the school’s curriculum and are designed to stretch the students’ ability. The classes are on a Saturday morning at the University of Plymouth. The dates for this series are: 28th Jan, 11th Feb, 25th Feb, 10th March and 24th March. The cost per student for the series of 5 classes is £25 to cover resources, refreshments, speakers etc. The classes are open to all schools in the area and are extremely popular. Therefore I must initially limit numbers to a maximum of four per school and it is only fair that we ask that the students who wish to go are willing to attend all five classes. Schools local to Plymouth should have recieved a letter along with an application form, if not please contact me: jenny sharp

Schools may apply for places on the masterclass as detailed in the letter. To submit your application electronically please complete this application form and email it to me by 2nd December: jenny sharp

South West Masterclass Event

As a follow up event for the students who attended the Year 9 masterclasses in the Spring we run a one day workshop in June for those students who attended the Plymouth, Exeter and Truro series. Again it provides an opportunity for students to others who are interested in mathematics and the activities allow them to see some applications of mathematics. The date for the 2012 South West Masterclass event is Wednesday 20th June 2012. Letters will be sent out in May to students who attended the Plymouth series, students who attended the Truro and Exeter series will be contacted by their organisers.

Residential Masterclass

The final event in the Masterclass programme is a three day residential course for the year 10 students who attended the Plymouth and Truro masterclass series the previous year. Planning for this is in the early stage, more details will follow.

BWCI Mathematics Masterclass

For many years the CTM has been involved in a three day event which provides Guernsey with two Primary Masterclasses for students in year 5 from all Primary schools on the Island, a Year 9 Masterclass for all secondary schools, a Year 12 form Masterclass for all Year 12 form Schools and an additional Year 9 masterclass for one particular school - Les Beaucamps.
