Mary Ann Harasymowycz

Mary Ann is a mathematics teacher at Williamsville North High School, Williamsville, New York, U.S.A. She obtained a B.A. in mathematics from St. John's University, Jamaica, New York and an M.S. in mathematics from Adelphi University, Garden City, New York. Both degrees were earned with minors in secondary education.

Mary Ann was honored as the New York State Presidential Awardee for Excellence in Secondary Mathematics Teaching in 1995 and selected by a former student for "Who's Who Among America's Teachers" 2000. She present workshops for teachers in her school district, at Association of Mathematics Teachers of New York State Conferences, New York State Middle School Association Conferences, and several National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Conferences. In 1992 she founded and still facilitates AIM-HIGH, a monthly math teacher support group in the Western New York area. In 1993, she was honored to present a short paper at the First US/Russia Joint Conference on Mathematics Education in Moscow, Russia. Samples of student work from projects Mary Ann has created have been published in the New York State Math, Science, Technology Learning Standard Document and Teacher Curriculum Resource Guide. For the last three years, she has been working with the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards as a Trainer for scoring candidates for National Teacher Certification in Early Adolescent Mathematics.

Mary Ann is a member of the Lewis Carroll Society and British Origami Society and was awarded a Sci-Mat Fellowship in 1994 to research anamorphic art. These interests have clearly made an impact on the ways in which she can prove to her students that "math is everywhere!" Not surprisingly, her research interests involve interdisciplinary approaches to teaching and learning mathematics. Making connections for students between mathematics and other disciplines, she believes, enhances their view of mathematics as a necessary and useful tool and strengthens confidence in their ability to do mathematics.
