CAUSE OF REDUCTION IN ROPE STRENGTH
The measured breaking force for the section cut from the rope was 232 kN (approximately 23.2 tonnes). This is some 30% lower than would be expected.  Typical damage to the rope is shown in Figure 4. Rope5.gif (75803 bytes)
Compare his damage with the pictures on wire rope problems given in the hyperlink to the Wire Rope Corporation of America. Determine the likely cause of this damage.  What do you think the probable inference of this is for the present failure?
