B 0 Safety |
1 Introduction
The HoS is responsible for safety in SoE, however to effectively manage safety s/he
will be advised by professionally qualified staff and specialist technicians.
'Students' in these sections include undergraduate and postgraduate.
All students must receive a safety briefing during their induction. Part of this will involve collection of either a signed statement by the student that s/he has had a safety briefing, or a record that the student has taken an online assessment.
Laboratories, workshops and all areas of the school, must have risk assessments carried out and these must be reviewed on a regular basis. Ensuring this is done and the storage of the assessments lies with the Technical Manager.
2 Students in Laboratories
Where a laboratory class is to be carried out by students, the academic who is the
module leader is responsible for ensuring that a risk assessment has been carried
out. Normally the risk assessment for these 'routine' experiments will have been
carried out by the laboratory technicians and Technical Manager.
The academic is responsible for ensuring that appropriate written and verbal
guidance is available for the students. If anyone other than a technician is
involved in supervising the students in the laboratory, then the academic must
ensure that these people have been properly briefed and are familiar with the
risk assessment and the equipment being used.
Students wishing to carry out practical project work must write a risk assessment prior to undertaking any practical work, this must be checked by the project supervisor. Where the supervisor is professionally qualified and familiar with the laboratory or work area, then s/he may sign off the risk assessment. Otherwise the risk assessment must be signed off by the HoS or DHoS.
3 Trips off Campus, Including Field Trips
Where students are going off campus and visiting any place where a risk
assessment may not have been carried out, the academic leading the visit must
complete a risk assessment and this must be signed off by the HoS or DHoS.
In some cases the owners of the 'place' being visited may request a copy of the risk
assessment in advance of the visit.
