BSc (Hons) Marine Technology

The three year BSc (Hons) Marine Technology course aims to give you a broad range of skills from the discipline of marine technology. However graduates from this course have also learnt wider skills from a range of complementary subjects which have allowed them not only to pursue careers in yacht design and construction; with the Ministry of Defence; shipbuilders and offshore consultants, but also in management; administration and computing. The course develops knowledge and skills in key aspects of marine technology, namely the design of marine structures and vessels and the design of marine plant systems and offshore engineering.

Year One: You will be introduced to the marine and offshore industries and to ship design and behaviour through a range of modules. You will also be taught graduate skills such as study and computing skills and basic statistics through tutorials and workshops. The first year (or stage), follows modules in: mechanics; thermodynamics; design and mathematics.

Year Two: In the second year you will develop your skills in the design of marine structures and vessels, and of marine plants and systems. The course teaches stress analysis and the concepts of resistance and propulsion, the analysis of marine structures, and the application of thermodynamics and fluid mechanics to marine plant. In addition to core modules in marine technology, you will be able to follow optional modules in a variety of subjects.

Year Three: A project is carried out on a topic of personal interest and you will be able to pursue your chosen optional subject from Stage Two. Optional modules include: naval architecture; marine engineering; offshore engineering; marine navigation; shipping; maritime law and commerce and maritime history.
