BSc MediaLab Arts: a model...

The BSc MediaLab Arts Programme is an innovative course in interactive multimedia, its design, production and application. It is adventurous and experimental in its approach to the exploration of evolving technologies and aesthetics, and combines skills in both the creative arts and computing. It started in September 1992 and had its first crop of students in July 96.

BSc MediaLab Arts aims to equip students with the theoretical and practical design and production skills needed to harness a rapidly developing communications medium. The merging of computing and creative media design has resulted in a fusion initiating an evolution of teaching and learning experiences. As a practice it is clear that multimedia design, production, and theory has found a singular identity which is not just the mixing of computing and creative design, or the product of designers / artists using computers or the product of computing users grappling with creative design practices.

Our Multimedia Studios are equipped with a range of production facilities including: video/digital video editing, cameras, scanners, CD-ROM printer & players, and networked multimedia workstations. Students also use a variety of computer systems. Video and photographic tuition and facilities are based at Plymouth College of Art and Design. These and the University T.V. studio, which is equipped for live interactive satellite transmissions, are available for student projects. The course is supported by a leading multimedia software company, Macromedia Europe.
