Brian Mushens
Programmes Director

Hello, I am Brian Mushens - still no photograph!

Background

I graduated from the University of Aston in Birmingham in 1978 armed with a BSc (Hons) in Communication Science and Linguistics. I gained an MSc in Information Retrieval from the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne Computing Laboratory in 1982. I joined the then Plymouth Polytechnic Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Computing in 1982 to coincide with the start of the BSc (Hons) Computing and Informatics course and I've been here ever since - through Polytechnic South West, Department of Computing to University of Plymouth and School of Computing (and semesters, modules and programmes of study...)

Teaching Interests

Most of my teaching is centred around Information Retrieval which is the most important application of computing in the world today (I would say that, wouldn't I? - how did you find this page ?)

Currently I teach the following modules:

I also look after the CandI final stage projects (PRCI301/302)

Departmental Duties

Currently I am Programmes Director, BSc (Hons) Computing and Informatics Programme Manager and Final Stage Tutor

If there are any CandI graduates out there, then drop me an email message ( brian@soc.plym.ac.uk) and let me know what you're up to. One of these days I'll set up an alumni page.

Research Interests

I find it difficult to find time to do real research and content myself with trying to keep up to date with developments in Information Retrieval (IR) via scholarly activity. I am particularly interested on the impact of the WWW on IR (and vice versa) and IR systems evaluation.

Hobbies

I have two expensive hobbies (ask my wife!) - golf and photography. I've played golf man and boy but have only recently come to terms with the mental game to get my handicap down to 13. My wife has also taken up the game despite my warnings.

Photography allows me to do someting completely different from work. I enjoy trying to be creative but admit that I'm much better on the technical side.

I am a fanatical Sunderland supporter and I'm looking forward to a swift return to the Premiership after a brief period of enforced consolidation in the Nationwide League .
