Dr. Nigel Barlow

BSc (Hons), MSc, PhD

Senior Lecturer

Hello, I am Nigel Barlow. I have been a lecturer in the School of Computing since September 1986.

Background

I graduated as an Electronic Engineer in 1981. I have worked for GEC Marconi Radar, but decided that the "corporate" work environment and myself did not get on.

Since then I have completed a PhD in underwater acoustics, based at UCNW, Bangor, North Wales. In 1986 I was offered a lecturing job in the School of Computing.

What do underwater acoustics and computing have in common?

Quite a lot. There is much remote data collection and sensing (we designed and built our own hardware - including computer monitors which float when dropped over the side of a boat!). There is also a much digital signal processing combined with graphical presentation of data.

I am married and have a brand new baby boy (14th December 1995). I have some photographs for those who wish to be bored by my snaps.....

Research Interests

I confess that I have become rather out of touch with the world of underwater acoustics, though I still have contact with the Institute of Hydrology at Wallingford and with the Marine Laboratories at Plymouth. Current interests are computer graphics, object oriented programming and its application to computer graphics, and the (usually graphical) presentation of psychometric tests.

Hobbies

I am (or was before the baby was born) a keen sailor. I also take (took) an active part in the village events of Calstock, where I live. I hope that one day the Calstock festival will rival the Edinburgh or Bath festivals. You have another chance to view the photographs.
