Professor Emmanuel C. Ifeachor

Research Interests

Primary research interests are signal processing and knowledge modelling techniques and their applications to key real world problems in the areas of multimedia communications (e.g. perceptual-based quality of service prediction and control for voice and video over IP), audio (e.g. sound synthesis, mixing and audio quality assessment) and biomedicine (e.g. biosignals processing and complex data analysis and interpretation for decision support). Of special interest is promotion of transfer of advanced signal processing and artificial intelligence technologies to industry.

Biography

Professor Ifeachor received the B.Sc. (Hons) degree in communication engineering from University of Plymouth in 1980, the M.Sc. degree and DIC in communication engineering from Imperial College, London in 1981, and a PhD degree in medical electronics from the University of Plymouth in 1985. He has published extensively in the areas signal processing and computational intelligence, including co-authoring Digital Signal Processing – A Practical Approach (Addison Wesley, 1993; Prentice Hall, 2002), and edited/co-edited five books including Artificial Neural Networks for Biomedicine (Springer, 2000). He was Guest Editor for the Special Issue of the IEE Proceedings (SMT) on Medical Signal Processing in November 2000. He has received several external awards for his work, including two awards from the Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE) – Dr V.K. Zworykin Premium for papers on fetal ECG analysis and EEG artetacfs processing.

Professor Ifeachor has organised and chaired a number of major international conferences in signal processing and computational intelligence, including the first IEE International Conference on Advances in Medical Signal & Information Processing (Bristol, 4-6 September, 2000). He has served on numerous international technical committees for major events, including those organised by the IEE and IEEE. Professor Ifeachor has successfully led many industry and government funded projects a number of which have been commercially exploited. His Chair was sponsored by the communications company, WWG/Acterna, for four years (1996-2000).

Professor Ifeachor was Head of School of Electronic, Communication and Electrical engineering from 1995 to 1999. He currently serves on the UK Committee for Professors and Heads of Electrical Engineering (PHEE) and on the Executive Team of the IEE Professional Networks on Healthcare Technologies.
